Stand-Up 360, a series of comedy films, hopes to take advantage of this by bringing comedians who have performed in the above locales to movie theaters across the country.
The films, which will be released periodically throughout the summer, include live performances of stand-up comedy from New York City as well as behind-the-scenes footage of the comedians.
"Even though you're in a movie theater, you feel like you're in a comedy club," said MODI, one of the comedians appearing in Stand-Up 360. "You're experiencing the best New York has to offer."
Each of the seven films showcases a different comedian, including "Stand-Up 360: Inside Out," which features gay and lesbian comedians, and "Stand-Up 360: ¡Muy Caliente!," which features Latino comedians.
"What's great about 360 is it's a series; it's not just one film," said Vanessa Hollingshead, another featured comedian. "It's got everything for everybody."
MODI's comedy career began 15 years ago in New York City.
"I used to work for Merrill Lynch," he said. "I used to imitate all the secretaries and all the languages, and a friend said, 'Do it on stage.'"
After finding some success, he began to expand his comedy routine and draw upon his own experiences.
"I sort of abandoned the accents and found my own voice," he said.
MODI now lives in Los Angeles after doing a TV show there. His old job once again led him to comedy, this time to Stand-Up 360.
"One of the producers is my old manager and one of my best friends, and when he put it together … he thought of me right away," MODI said.
