Georgia softball no-hits Arkansas, sweeps
Issue date: 5/4/09 Section: Sports
The Georgia softball team was nearly perfect Sunday, sweeping a doubleheader from the Razorbacks in Fayetteville, Ark., by a combined score of 16-2.
Following the cancellation of Saturday afternoon's match up due to rain, the No. 8 Bulldogs (39-9; 18-7 SEC) took the field on Sunday and proceeded to dismantle an overmatched Arkansas team.
In the first game, sophomore Sarah McCloud and senior Christie Hamilton combined to throw the school's 24th no-hitter in an 8-0 victory.
Sophomore third baseman Alisa Goler continued her record-setting season at the plate by hitting her 20th home run of the season-becoming just the third player in SEC history to cross the 20 home run plateau - while driving in four runs for the Bulldogs.
Senior shortstop Kristen Schanke and sophomore first baseman Brianna Hesson each drove in two runs to provide the rest of the offense for Georgia.
Following 3.1 innings of work in game one, Hamilton took the mound in the second game and notched her 21st win of the season pitching five innings while giving up just two hits and striking out six batters in an 8-2 Bulldog victory.
For the weekend, McCloud and Hamilton combined to throw 10 innings surrendering just two hits while walking five and striking out seven batters.
Goler once again provided the majority of the runs for the Bulldogs, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs-pushing her season total to 75, which is just four behind the SEC single-season record of 79 set by Alabama's Charlotte Morgan in 2008.
With Alabama's victory over Tennessee on Saturday, the Bulldogs were unable to lock up the No. 2 seed in next week's SEC Tournament but will head to Knoxville, Tenn., as the No. 3 seed and will take on the Kentucky Wildcats.
The Bulldogs swept the No. 6 seed Wildcats earlier this season in a three-game series in Athens by a combined score of 18-3.
