Georgia track hosts invite this weekend
Issue date: 5/8/09 Section: Sports
Georgia's track and field teams will host the Georgia Invitational on Saturday with the start of the Southeastern Conference Outdoor Championships just days away.
A mixture of teams, which include Georgia State, Fort Valley State, Chattahoochee Tech, Savannah State and Shorter, and individual competitors, featuring several Olympians, are expected to make the trip to Athens to compete.
This will be Georgia's final action before the teams make the trip to Gainesville, Fla., next week for the SEC Championships, which run from Thursday to Sunday.
"This will be a small meet with a couple schools and some post-collegiate individuals from the Atlanta area," said head coach Wayne Norton, whose teams were off last weekend. "But this has always been a good meet for us with SECs around the corner. It can be an important one for people who haven't competed in two weeks and for those who are fine-tuning a couple things before next week arrives. We won't be going too hard at this meet, but we will still be getting out there and competing."
