Georgia women's golfers in 8th after NCAA Regional second round
Issue date: 5/8/09 Section: Sports
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The Georgia women's golf team posted a 295 in Friday's second round of the NCAA East Regional, pushing the 14th-ranked Bulldogs into eighth on the team leaderboard entering the final round at Florida's Mark Bostick Golf Course.
"It was a little bit of a struggle today," head coach Kelley Hester said. "It was super hot, and I think kids got a little wilted. We're going to be right in the middle of it. We'll go out tomorrow and enjoy the challenge of being in the thick of things."
Georgia is currently among the top eight squads that would qualify for the NCAA Championships; however, the Bulldogs are in a tightly punched pack fighting for those bids. Only tourney-leading Alabama seems to be secure, while just 10 strokes separate sixth and 13th places in the team standings.
Senior Mallory Hetzel led Georgia with a 1-under 69 on the par-70 layout, while Marta Silva Zamora chipped in a 71, Carolina Andrade added a 77 and Tess Fordhman contributed a 78. Leigh Crosby shot 86, the Dogs' dropped tally.
"Mal played great, and Marta had an outstanding round," Hester said.
Georgia teed off on No. 10 and played the back side of the course first. Hetzel bogeyed her first hole but gained that stroke back with a birdie-4 at No. 12. Following seven consecutive pars, Hetzel inched to 2-under with birdies at No. 2 and No. 7 before closing with a bogey at No. 9.
Overall, Hetzel vaulted from 40th to 14th on the individual leaderboard. She is at 4-over 144, five shots back of leader Camilla Lennarth of Alabama. In addition, Silva Zamora is tied for 24th at 147, Andrade is tied for 46th at 150, Fordham is tied for 54th at 151 and Crosby is 102nd at 168.
The No. 6-ranked Crimson Tide opened up a seven-shot lead on the field with a 291 on Friday to improve to 575. Rounding out the teams still in serious contention for the NCAA field are No. 20 Denver at 583; Tennessee and Vanderbilt at 585; No. 3 Virginia at 587; Tulane at 588; No. 12 Duke at 591; the Bulldogs at 592; No. 10 North Carolina at 594; Furman at 595; ECU at 596; and No. 7 Auburn, South Carolina and Coastal Carolina all at 598.
The 54-hole event concludes on Saturday. The top eight teams and the top two individual finishers who are not members of those teams will advance to the NCAA Championships on May 19-22 at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mill, Md.
Georgia is paired with Duke and North Carolina in the final round, teeing off beginning at 8:30 from No. 1. Live scoring for the tournament is being updated on a three-hole basis here.
