Issue date: 5/12/09 Section: Sports
The 15th-ranked Georgia baseball team takes on rival Georgia Tech on Tuesday in the annual Spring Baseball Classic for Kids at Turner Field in Atlanta.
The Yellow Jackets won the first meeting between the teams, 11-6, on April 14 in Athens. The game slated for March 25 at Georgia Tech was canceled due to rain.
First pitch on Tuesday will be at 7:06, and the game will be televised by FS South.
It marks the seventh straight year the teams will square off in the Spring Baseball Classic for Kids with the Bulldogs holding a 5-1 edge in the series at Turner Field. Proceeds from the game benefit Children's Healthcare of Atlanta and its Brain and Spinal Cord Tumor Program.
The game raises more than $200,000 annually for the not-for-profit pediatric health care system. The 2008 Spring Baseball Classic for Kids drew more than 23,000 fans to Turner Field, making it one of the largest NCAA baseball games in history.
Georgia freshman Cecil Tanner (3-1, 4.15 ERA) will make his fifth start while Tech will counter with junior Zach Von Tersch (6-2, 5.47 ERA). Following the game against Georgia Tech, the Bulldogs will head to South Carolina on Thursday for a three-game series.
