Issue date: 5/12/09 Section: Sports
Georgia freshman Chelsey Gullickson has been named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association South Region Rookie Player of the Year, the ITA announced Tuesday.
Gullickson, a 5-11 native of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., has helped the second-ranked Bulldogs to the 2009 Southeastern Conference title, the team's third straight SEC Tournament title. Currently, Georgia (25-2) is the number two overall seed in the NCAA Championships, and the Bulldogs are heading to College Station, Texas for their round of 16 match.
Gullickson is ranked ninth nationally in singles and sixth in doubles with freshman Nadja Gilchrist. This is the latest accolade for Gullickson who already has earned ITA All-America and All-SEC honors along with being named the SEC Freshman of the Year. She is 36-9 in singles and 11-4 in doubles with Gilchrist. She will be in the NCAA singles and doubles field too.
Gullickson is one of the eight regional winners who are in the running for the national award, which will be announced at the NCAA Championships Awards Banquet in College Station, Texas on May 19. The ITA Rookie Player of the Year Award goes to a freshman that has had the most outstanding first year in college tennis including their results, national ranking and contributions to the team in the areas of sportsmanship and leadership.
"Chelsey has had one of the best freshman seasons ever by a Bulldog, and we're pleased with her work ethic on and off the court," said Georgia coach Jeff Wallace. "We've had big contributions from everybody on the team this season and that's what college tennis is all about."
The other regional rookie player of the year winners include: Lauren McHale (East: Princeton), Mallory Cecil (Southeast: Duke), Sonja Mulnar (Midwest: Iowa), Mary Weatherholt (Central: Nebraska), Marta Lesniak (Southwest: SMU), Jana Juricova (Northwest: California), Natasha Marks (West: Arizona).
