Issue date: 5/15/09 Section: News
The Red & Black won two national awards and was a finalist in two others in the Society of Professional Journalists Mark of Excellence Awards announced Wednesday.
The staff took first place in general news reporting for its coverage of sexual harassment at the University. In spring 2008, The Red & Black uncovered documents which detailed several instances of sexual harassment by professors against their students, in some cases over a 20-year period. Stories from the same series also won the the Investigative Reporters and Editors Student Award and the Betty Gage Holland Award, both national contests.
Also taking first place nationally is Bill Richards for editorial cartooning. Richards, named the SPJ Region 3 winner three years running, was a national finalist in 2008 for the Scripps Howard Foundation's Charles M. Schulz Award and the 2008 Associated Collegiate Press Editorial Cartooning Award.
Brian Hughes was named a national finalist in sports writing for his story on Todd McCorkle, the former University women's golf coach accused of sexual harassment. The harassment series was also a national finalist in the online in-depth reporting category.
The students will be recognized in August at the Mark of Excellence Luncheon at the SPJ Convention in Indianapolis.
