GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Junior Tommy Barrineau is in fourth place in the decathlon during the opening day of the decathlon at the Southeastern Conference Championships on the University of Florida campus.

Barrineau scored 3,630 points through five of 10 events and trails Mississippi State's Tevarus Christian, who is in third, by only four points while senior Cory Harris is in eighth place (3,360). Sophomore David Silverstein was forced to retire from the competition before the 400-meter dash because of a leg injury.

The first day of action was delayed for approximately two and a half hours after just two events into the decathlon and heptathlon when severe thunderstorms moved through the Gainesville area. All of the events on Thursday did not end until around 11 p.m.

"There were absolutely crazy conditions today but I am pretty happy with how our guys did," said assistant and multi-events coach Petros Kyprianou. "I'm expecting both guys to finish in the top six. True decathletes have strong second days and I think these guys will continue to fight."

Barrineau finished second in the shot put with a season-best throw of 43-1.75 to shoot to fourth place overall. In the high jump, Barrineau went over the bar at a season-best height of 6-3.50 to score 731 more points. He completed the day by grabbing another fourth-place finish after clocking a 50.69 in the 400.

Barrineau compiled a personal-best 7,142 points for fourth place at last year's SEC meet. After scoring 3,725 points during the first day in 2008, Barrineau finished with the fourth-most points in Bulldog history.

Harris tied his season-best time in the 100 (11.22) before traveling a career-best 21-6 for fifth place in the long jump. His second personal best of the day came in the high jump as he cleared 5-8.50. Harris wrapped up his day by taking sixth in the 400 (51.75).

Harris finished 14th in the decathlon (6,223 pts.) at the 2008 meet, but scored a personal-best 6,270 points at last year's Spec Towns meet.

Silverstein opened the meet with a personal-best time of 11.59 in the 100. But after tweaking his groin in the 100, he finally dropped out before the day's final event.

The final five events of the decathlon - 110 hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500 - will begin at 12:30 p.m. on Friday.

The men's hammer will be the first event outside of the decathlon and heptathlon events and will get going at 2 p.m. on Friday. The Bulldogs have four throwers in position to score in the hammer with senior Nate Rolfe leading the way at the No. 2 spot (221 feet). Juniors Branislav Danis, John Freeman and David Schiedt are all also ranked in the top eight in the SEC.

The men's 800 prelims, which will feature seniors Ross Ridgewell and Kris Ward, are scheduled to be the first regular event on the track starting at 6 p.m. Ridgewell was seventh in the event at last year's outdoor meet and was the runner-up at the 2009 SEC Indoor Championships.
