After trailing Arkansas by one point going into the final day of the SEC Outdoor Championships, the Georgia men's track and field squad ended up finishing tied for 5th place at the meet's end.
The No. 20 Bulldog men scored 72 points, tying them with the Auburn Tigers, and finished with one individual event champion (Chris Hill - javelin). The Arkansas men, who Georgia trailed by a single point after Day 3, went on to win the SEC team title by scoring 141 points.
The women went on to accumulate 45.5 points to place in ninth place for the conference championships.
Both the Bulldog men and women improved on their finish in the 2009 SEC Indoor Championships, where they finished 8th and 11th, respectively.
Senior Justin Gaymon was a top scorer for Georgia on Sunday, scoring eight points for the Bulldogs. Gaymon finished second in the 400-meter hurdles with a season-best time of 48.86 seconds, coming behind South Carolina's Johnny Dutch and barely missing his third straight SEC 400-meter hurdle title.
Junior Michelle Thompson also logged a second-place finish in her first career SEC meet. Thompson, a transfer from Cuyamaca College, threw the second-longest throw of her career (171 feet, 5 inches) to earn the Bulldog women eight points. Junior Emily Sanders also picked up five more points for the women by finishing 4th in the javelin (145 feet, 6 inches).
Other top scorers included Kristie Krueger in women's 1500-meter run (4th), Israel Machovec in women's discus (5th), Carin Walker in women's high jump (5th), and the men's 4x400-meter relay (5th).
The track and field squads look ahead to the NCAA East Regional meet in Greensboro, N.C.
