OWINGS MILL, Md. -- The Georgia women's golf team posted a 316 in Tuesday's opening round of the NCAA Championships at Caves Valley Golf Club, placing the Bulldogs in a tie for 21st in the 24-team field.
Georgia's counting scores were a 75 from Marta Silva Zamora, a 77 from Mallory Hetzel and a pair of 82s from Carolina Andrade and Tess Fordham. Leigh Crosby shot 87 but had as many birdies as any of her teammates on the day.
"It's my opinion that par is about 75," head coach Kelley Hester said. "The course is set up really difficult. I'm not complaining. It's the same for everyone, but when you play a really difficult golf course you have to alter your expectations. For the morning teams, the low round was 299 -- and 294 leads overall.
"Marta played a wonderful round of golf," Hester continued. "I told Mallory that she was really 2-over in my mind. Carolina did struggle some and Tess and Leigh did too, but this is the kind of golf course that you can make up a lot of ground with one good day. We'll work on a couple of things and go out and try to improve on it tomorrow."
Denver grabbed the first-day lead with a 294. Denver's Stephanie Sherlock and North Carolina's Catherine O'Donnell are co-individual leaders as each signed for a 70.
For the Bulldogs, Silva Zamora is tied for 25th, Hetzel is tied for 50th, Andrade and Fordham are knotted at 107th, and Crosby is tied for 121st.
The Bulldogs struggled late in the day, dropping a combined eight strokes on the final five holes.
Georgia plays in the afternoon on Wednesday, teeing off from No. 1 in waves with Pepperdine and Chattanooga beginning at 12:50 p.m. Tee times for the third and fourth rounds will be determined by team standings entering those days.
