Issue date: 5/21/09 Section: Sports
COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS - Georgia junior Nate Schnugg posted a 6-1,6-4 win over Reid Carleton (Duke) Wednesday to advance to the round of 32 at the NCAA Singles Championship.
The 12th-ranked Schnugg improved his record to 36-14. Up next, Schnugg will face Illinois freshman Dennis Nevolo Thursday. The Big Ten Freshman of the Year is 28-12 and ranked No. 39. He collected a straight set win over No. 55 Yoann Re (Virginia Tech) in his first round match.
"Nate is on his way, he played pretty well today," said Georgia coach Manuel Diaz. "He did a good job of putting volleys away and while he can still improve on his first serve percentage, his second serve gave Reid some trouble."
On Thursday the NCAA Doubles Championship begins, and Schnugg and Jamie Hunt will be among the field of 32. The All-America duo is seeded fourth. They will face Houston Barrick and Sanam Singh of Virginia. The third-ranked Cavalier tandem edged the Bulldog team 9-8(3) during the National Team Indoors this past February. Currently, the Schnugg-Hunt team is ranked fifth nationally with a 30-11 record.
The top four doubles seeds are hail from the Southeastern Conference. The top seed is Jonas Berg/Bram ten Berge (Ole Miss), followed by Davey Sandgren/John-Patrick Smith (Tennessee), Neal Skupski/Michael Venus (LSU) and the aforementioned Bulldogs. This season, the Schnugg/Hunt team went 1-0 versus the top seed, and 1-1 against the No. 2 and 3 seeded teams.
