Diamond Dogs eliminated from SEC Tournament
Issue date: 5/25/09 Section: Sports
HOOVER, Ala. - Micah Gibbs' two-run single in the bottom of the fifth broke a 1-1 tie and helped LSU defeat Georgia 3-2, eliminating the Bulldogs from the SEC Tournament Saturday at Regions Park. The game was shortened to seven innings due to rain delays earlier Saturday. LSU beat Georgia 16-0 earlier in the day to force the second game.
Leon Landry singled to right field with one out in the fifth for LSU (45-16), then walks to Ryan Schimpf and Blake Dean loaded the bases for Gibbs, who gave LSU its first lead with his opposite field hit.
Nolan Cain (5-0) held Georgia to two runs on three hits in 5.1 innings. Will Harvil (4-2) was charged with the loss after allowing a run on one hit in 1.1 inning. Georgia starter Jeff Walters surrendered just one run on four hits in three innings in his first start of the season.
Georgia (37-22) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Zach Cone doubled down the left field line on the game's first pitch then Matt Cerione walked. Cone moved to third on a flyout by Rich Poythress then scored on a sacrifice fly by Lyle Allen.
LSU tied it at 1-1 on a one-out double to right center by Dean that scored Schimpf from first, then took the lead in the fifth.
After Cone's double in the first, Cain didn't allow another hit until Cone doubled down the left field line again to start Georgia's sixth inning. The hit snapped a string of 14 straight batters sat down by Cain. A one-out walk to Poythress put runners at first and second for Bryce Massanari, whose single to left field scored Cone and cut the LSU lead to 3-2.
The Tigers tried to add to the lead in the bottom of the sixth, but Matt Cerione gunned down Tyler Hanover at the plate on a single up the middle to keep Georgia within one run.
Colby May singled up the middle on an 0-2 pitch to start the seventh for Georgia but Paul Bertuccini induced a ground ball double play on the next batter and went on to earn his third save.
The 16 regional sites and host sites for the NCAA Tournament will be announced on the BottomLine of ESPN Networks and at www.ncaa.com at approximately 3:30 p.m. Eastern time on Sunday. The 64-team field, with first-round regional pairings and site assignments, will be revealed in a live, half-hour telecast on ESPN at 12:30 p.m. Eastern on Monday.
