COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS - Stanford sophomore Alex Clayton eliminated University of Georgia junior Nate Schnugg 6-4,7-6(4) here Friday to move on to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships.
Clayton, ranked 21st nationally, notched a service break in the first game of the match and that would be the only one of the first set. However, it was enough as he held serve en route to taking the first set 6-4. In the second set, the match remained tight and ultimately the 12th-ranked Schnugg had one set point at 5-4 but Clayton saved it for a hold. At 6-6, the set came down to a tiebreaker.
Schnugg picked up a mini-break for a 2-0 lead but a backhand error on the fourth point evened it back at 2-2. The pair remained on serve until a big forehand by Clayton resulted in a 5-3 edge. A double fault by Schnugg made it 6-3. He saved one match point with a nice lob followed by a forehand winner. However on Clayton's next match point, his strong serve put Schnugg on the defensive, and the Cardinal attacked and finished off the match.
Schnugg ends the season with a 37-15 record with 24 wins over ranked opponents. He earned ITA All-America honors in singles and doubles. He and junior Jamie Hunt have a round of 16 doubles match late Friday.
The fifth-ranked Schnugg/Hunt duo will battle California's 19th-ranked team of Geoff Chizever and Pedro Zerbini. The Bulldogs are seeded fourth and are 31-11 this year.
Also on Friday, the Campbell/ITA final team rankings were released, and the Bulldogs conclude the season at No. 6 with a 25-4 record.
