Georgia's Goler, Schlopy named first team All-Americans
Issue date: 5/28/09 Section: Sports
Georgia sophomores Alisa Goler and Taylor Schlopy were named Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division I All-Americans according to an announcement made by the NFCA on Wednesday.
Both Goler and Schlopy were selected as First-Team members with Goler at third base and Taylor an at-large outfield selection.
The sophomore duo become the seventh and eighth players in school history to be recognized as All-Americans, and they are the first to earn Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-America honors since Kellie Middleton (2nd team), Jessica Doucette (3rd team) and Megan McAllister (3rd team) did so in 2006. The only two Bulldogs to previously earn NFCA All-America First Team honors were Kim Wendland (2004 & 2005) and Nicole Barber (2004).
Goler, a native of Frankfort, Ill., is currently batting .464 with 23 home runs and 79 runs-batted in. She ranks among the national leaders in several statistical categories including first in slugging percentage (1.026), second in RBI per game (1.46), third toughest to strikeout (0.026 strikeouts per at-bat), third in home run total, third in home runs per game (0.43), ninth in batting average (.464), 10th in on-base percentage (.553) and 18th in doubles per game (0.32).
Goler has set single-season school records for home runs, RBI, extra-base hits (40) and total bases (157), and by season's end she stands poised to establish new records for batting average and slugging percentage. Additionally, Goler's current slugging percentage would be a new Southeastern Conference record, and she is vying to become just the eighth player in NCAA Division I history to slug over 1.000.
A top-10 finalist for the USA Softball College Player of the Year Award, Goler is also chasing the Georgia and SEC "triple crown," by leading in batting average, home runs and RBI. Goler currently leads the team in those categories and would be the first Bulldogs since Jessi Cerra in 1999 to achieve the feat, and in the SEC, Goler leads in home runs and RBI but is second in batting average.
Schlopy, a native of West Hills, Calif., is currently batting .431 with 13 home runs, 41 RBI and a team-leading 66 runs scored. Nationally, Schlopy ranks second in runs per game (1.22), fourth in on-base percentage (.574), 13th in slugging percentage (.847), 26th in walks per game (0.67) and 28th in batting average (.431). On the base paths, Schlopy as stolen a team-leading 20 bases in 21 attempts.
Schlopy, a selection to attend the 2009 USA Softball National Team Selection Camp, has scored 43 of her 66 runs this season after reaching as a leadoff batter, a role in which she is batting .547 with a slugging percentage of 1.113 and an on-base percentage of .700. She is currently on pace to establish a new single-season school record for on-base percentage and would be on the brink of setting a slugging percentage record but trails only Goler's 2009 mark. Schlopy was also named a CoSIDA ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District selection this year.
