University student John Terrell Bramlett, a senior in the Recreation and Leisure Studies program and a strong advocate for the deaf community, died Sunday.

"You could count on John to take charge, challenge assumptions, lead his peers, and connect classroom experiences so that learning had a meaningful outcome," said Corey Johnson, associate professor in the Department of Counseling and Human Development Services.

Bramlett was an interpreter at the University's Disability Resource Center. Johnson said Bramlett came to UGA to earn a bachelors degree so he could combine his sign language skills with advanced training in camp management and event coordination. In April, Bramblett used a class assignment to create a fundraiser to help disadvantaged kids attend summer camp, Johnson said.

Bramlett was the co-director of Camp Juliena, a residential camp for the deaf and hard of hearing. He began as a counselor there in 2000 and was named the co-director in 2003.

"In a recent dinner conversation about service-learning and community partnerships, John expressed his philosophy about Camp Juliena, saying 'It is our goal to make, even for the shortest of time, these children feel validated, so they feel thought about and important. To make their lives easier' " Johnson said.

According to Camp Juliena, Bramlett graduated from Georgia Perimeter College's Interpreter Training Program in 2002 and worked for the Atlanta Area School for the Deaf and DeKalb County School System. He also volunteered with a Deaf Boy Scouts troop at Camp Rainey Mountain and in 2005 earned National Certification and returned to Georgia Perimeter College as a staff interpreter.

The circumstances of his death are unknown

The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday with a funeral service to follow at the Tim Stewart Funeral Home, 300 Simonton Road in Lawrenceville. The service is open to the public.
