A University student was arrested and charged with felony theft by shoplifting after a worker at a downtown clothing store suspected her and another man of taking almost $700 in items.

Azadeh Shadea Sigari, an 18-year-old freshman from Marietta, was arrested following a call made to Athens-Clarke County police from a worker at Heery's Clothes Closet.

According to the report:

The witness said a young couple came into the store June 11 and took multiple items amounting to $681. The items included a $325 orange Diane von Furstenberg dress, $98 cream Joie long-sleeved shirt, $158 white BCBG dress and $100 Language tube top.

The witness did not call the police when the crime initially occurred, but the couple returned the next day.

The responding officers walked around downtown to notify retail businesses about the shoplifting suspects and about an hour later saw a couple matching the description given by the Heery's worker.

Two witnesses from Heery's then identified Sigari and Travis Ryan Moon as the couple who allegedly stole the merchandise.

The witnesses said Sigari and Moon "took items into the dressing room and when they exited [the witnesses] did not see the items. After the couple left the employees found where the tags had been removed from the clothes and hidden by some shoes."

The arresting officer wrote he will follow up with Heery's to secure surveillance video of the incident.

Sigari refused to comment when contacted by The Red & Black.

According to Athens-Clarke County Magistrate Court records, Sigari has also been arrested twice for underage consumption.

Marijuana plant found on campus

A small suspected marijuana plant was found growing in the Latin American Ethnobotanical Garden on campus June 12.

A groundskeeper in the Latin American and Caribbean Studies Institute found the plant growing in a small black plastic planter, according to a University Police report.

Paul Duncan, public service assistant in the Latin American and Caribbean Studies Institute, told police no one was with the plant and it appeared it had not been cared for.

Police took the suspected marijuana plant into evidence. No other suspected illegal plants were reported on the scene.

Fraternity house robbed of photos

President of Lambda Chi Alpha Hunter Thompson reported a burglary at the fraternity's 990 S. Milledge Ave. house on June 14.

According to the report, persons unknown entered the residence and stole seven composite photos, each worth $2,000. Hunter told Athens-Clarke County police he believed the burglary was done by another fraternity, but he could not say which one it might be.

All other valuables were left alone and no other items were taken.

This should clear a spot for a more deserving student, one who actually WANTS to earn a degree. The question is WHY is she still a student after two arrests for underage consumption? What happened to the two strikes policy @ UGA? Now they really have no choice if this student proves to be guilty. (Continued…)

Haven't there been other cases of shoplifting on a large scale at Heery's?
