Due to early season injuries, Georgia's Chris Hill wasn't the favorite going into last weekend's NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, but he was on a mission to defend his javelin title.
And defend it he did, tossing a school-record 268 feet, 4 inches, which shattered last years winning toss of 257-3.
"It's nice to just be able to go out and compete without having that bullseye on your back," Hill told Georgia's sports communications.
The junior from Sulphur, La., had already won his first SEC crown, following that with his second straight NCAA East Regional title. His win marks the 13th national title for men's track and field.
Poythress continues to rake in national awards
Diamond Dog slugger Rich Poythress needs to clear more shelf room at his new abode with the Mariners organization as he earned yet another national honor this past week. Poythress was named to the Baseball America First-Team All-American list, joining other accolades such as Louisville Slugger All-American, Rivals.com All-American, and First Team All-SEC.
Poythress led Georgia in every major offensive category, racking up a team triple crown with a .376 average, 25 home-runs, and a school record 86 RBI, which broke current Major Leaguer Gordon Beckham's record 77 set just last season.
Poythress, a junior first baseman, was selected as the second pick of the second round (51st overall) by Seattle in the MLB draft last week.
Evans named region's top athletic director
Georgia athletic director Damon Evans had bigger than life shoes to fill when he took over for the legendary Vince Dooley in July 2004. But he has yet to disappoint, as Evans has been honored as the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Under Armour Football Bowl Subdivision Southeast Region Athletic Director of the Year.
Georgia has won 13 national team championships in five different sports during Evans' tenure.
Houts one of finalists for spot in University Games
The Lady Bulldogs do-it-all point guard Ashley Houts will be one of 14 college players from the country competing for the last 12 spots on the U.S. women's basketball team for the World University Games.
The Games are held every other year and feature top collegiate athletes from around the world. This year the athletes will be competing in Belgrade, Serbia.
Houts was a member of the U.S. team that won gold at the 2007 FIBA U-21 World Championships in Moscow. Houts, a rising senior, led the Lady Bulldogs with 12 points and almost five assists per game.
