Issue date: 6/26/09 Section: Sports
EUGENE, Ore. -- Following Chris Hill's victory in the javelin, a pair of former Lady Bulldog distance runners also competed at the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Ore., on Thursday night.
Natalie Picchetti raced in the opening round of the 1,500-meter run while Jill Steffens completed the women's 10,000, which was the day¹s final event.
The USA Championships will be broadcast to a national television audience on ESPN from 8-10 p.m. EDT today and from 7:30-9:30 p.m. on Saturday. NBC will carry the action on Sunday from 4-6 p.m.
The meet began on Thursday and runs through Sunday. Those individuals who finish in the top three in their respective events automatically advance to the IAAF World Outdoor Track & Field Championships (Aug. 15-23) in Berlin, Germany, if they have hit the "A" standard in their event and have met other qualifications.
Steffens, now represented by New Balance after completing her career at Georgia in 2008, finished 12th in the 10,000 after clocking a 33:27.43.
Steffens was an All-American in the 10,000 during the 2007 outdoor season and still holds the school record in the event (33:21.63). After capturing the '07 league championship in the indoor 5000, Steffens completed a rare double by winning both the 10,000 and 5000 at the SEC outdoor meet on Arkansas' newly renovated track.
Picchetti, who completed her eligibility for the Lady Bulldogs during the 2008 cross country season, took 23rd in the opening round of the 1500 with a time of 4:30.57. She had recently registered a career-best time of 4:14 to automatically qualify for the USA Championships.
Justin Gaymon and LaRon Bennett kick off the action in the first round of the 400 hurdles today at 7:25 p.m. EDT. Former two-time SEC steeplechase champion Sarah Madebach is also scheduled to run in the first round of the
steeplechase at 10:20 p.m. A late entry, former All-American Ian Burrell will be running in the 5000 at 11:15 p.m.
