Emily Cook, who was recently accepted into the University's Law School, was crowned Miss Georgia Sunday, the day after a Gwinnett County woman relinquished the post.

Gwinnett County school teacher Kristina Higgins was named the winner Saturday night in Columbus, but stepped down Sunday because she said her responsibilities as a middle school teacher would not leave her time to serve as Miss Georgia.

As runnerup, Cook, 22, was told Sunday she was the winner. She is a recent graduate of the University of Miami and will be competing for the Miss America crown in January in Las Vegas. She plans to delay entering UGA law school until next year.

Congratulations to the newest new Miss Georgia. The questions arises though as to why the first new Miss Georgia entered a contest she didn't want to win?

a gwinnett woman is putting the education of children and her responsibilities and duties ahead of herself on this one, a very noble thing - how does that state gwinnett lacks a sense of reality?

robert, your argument makes zero sense and I have to go with my instinct on this one by saying you are a douchebag. (Continued…)

Emily! Congrats first of all for being accepted into our law school. I know all too well what a fantastic honor that is. Secondly, you are definitely making the right decision to pursue this once in a lifetime opportunity and delay law school for a year. (Continued…)

I agree with lawdawg. Another reason lurks. One which may never be publicly known. Miss Higgins did not stumble into the pageant nor was she hand picked like some Hollywood starlets. (Continued…)
