Women's tennis to host ITA event
Issue date: 7/6/09 Section: Sports
For the second straight year, the Georgia women's tennis team will be a number one seed at an ITA Kick-Off Weekend event here. The Bulldogs will welcome Georgia State, William & Mary and Virginia Tech Jan. 29-30 at the Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Courts.
The nation's top 60 teams were seeded and placed in 15 four-team regional sites through a draft held recently by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. The No. 1 team in each site will face the No. 4 team. The No. 2 team will face the No. 3 team. Two matches are guaranteed - the winners/losers will play the following day. The 15 schools that win both of their matches at these events will be invited to play in the 2010 ITA National Team Indoor Championships, slated for Feb. 12-15 at the Nielsen Tennis Complex in Madison, Wis.
The Bulldogs advanced to the finals of the 2009 ITA National Team Indoor Championships and started their run with wins over Ole Miss and Marshall in Athens. The Bulldogs (27-3) finished the year ranked third nationally after reaching the NCAA Final Four.
Georgia has made 20 appearances at the ITA National Indoor event, winning three titles (1994, 1995, 2002) and finishing second three times (2001, 2004, 2009).
At the 2010 ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Athens, Georgia will be the No. 1 seed followed by No. 2 seed Georgia State, No. 3 William & Mary and No. 4 Virginia Tech.
The No. 2 seed Panthers earned their first NCAA Tournament bid this past spring. They went 11-5 and had a final ITA ranking of No. 46. This will be their first appearance in the ITA Indoor Championships. The Tribe finished No. 49 after posting a 10-12 mark while the Hokies went 13-11 and ended the year ranked No. 54.
