Chance Veazey, a freshman infielder on the Georgia baseball team, was injured in a motor vehicle accident shortly after leaving the Miller Learning Center Wednesday night.
According to Athens-Clarke County Police, at 10:40 p.m. Veazey was riding a 2009 Yamaha Vizio southbound on Lumpkin Street. Keeli Briana Zanders was driving a 1996 Honda Civic northbound and turned left onto Baxter Street in front of Veazey, forcing him to make an evasive maneuver. The Vizio fell on its side and slid into the side of the car.
Veazey, a 5-foot-9, 175-pound native of Tifton, Ga., suffered a back injury and was taken to St. Mary's Hospital.
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to Chance and his family right now," said Georgia coach David Perno. "Chance is a very tough individual and that's going to help him."
The son of Todd and Darby Veazey, Chance arrived at Georgia this fall as an Honor student out of Tift County High School. He is a pre-Business major. He was named the Blue Devils MVP and led the team in numerous offensive categories as a four-year starter. As a senior in 2009, he led the team with a .444 batting average and a .573 on-base percentage.
