BEER OF THE WEEK: Hop-It
JOSH SCHULTZ
Issue date: 11/5/09 Section: Out & About
Although some high-gravity beers are consumed in interest of potency, some offer outstanding flavor in addition to expedited inebriation.
The Urthel Brewery's "Hop-It" combines a plethora of hops, tropical fruits and spicy Belgian yeast.
Upon pouring it out of the bottle and into a tulip glass, one notices a gold and amber color, as well as heavy traces of foam on the rim of the glass.
The smell is similar to other Belgian ales. The fruity and spiced flavors of the yeast are very comparable to the yeast smell of Duvel.
Beer drinkers will notice almost immediately that Urthel's Belgian ale has a strong, hoppy bite.
This is followed by a taste similar to other Belgian triple ales and strong ales. There is also a hint of coriander and orange peel - or something else that accounts for the citrus flavors.
"Hop-It" is highly carbonated and has 9.5 percent alcohol by volume, but in combination with its hop, spice and fruity flavors, it is a very drinkable beer.
Urthel's "Hop-It" offers a unique taste Athens hopheads are sure to enjoy. This beer is widely available at ABC Package and Five Points Bottle Shop and is currently on tap at Trappeze Pub.
